Local pride: Bar Harbor is named for the sand bar that appears at low tide, letting you walk across the harbor floor to Bar Island for about 1.5 hours on either side of low tide — misjudge it and you're stranded until the sea retreats again. The town was incorporated in 1796 as "Eden" and only became Bar Harbor in 1918.
