If you only have a couple of days in Athens this summer (because you plan to spend time traveling outside of Athens), this itinerary is designed to maximize sightseeing while avoiding the hottest and most crowded parts of the city throughout the day. The focus here is to balance landmarks, neighborhood meandering, food, coffee, and leisurely breaks.

What to Wear in Athens

Athens is stylish but also practical. Then there are the high temperatures and dry climate. You don't want to overpack with a bunch of unnecessary items, and at the end of the day, if you need something, you can always go and buy it. These are some ideas to get you started.

Day 1 Outfit

  • Lightweight linen midi dress or flowy skirt and fitted tank
  • Crossbody (anti-theft) bag
  • Sunglasses
  • Comfortable white leather sneakers or supportive walking sandals with grip
  • Sun hat
  • Light scarf for sun protection (or for visiting religious sites that require your shoulders to be covered)

Day 2 Outfit

  • High-waisted linen trousers
  • Fitted tank with linen button-down shirt
  • Crossbody (anti-theft) bag
  • Sunglasses
  • Comfortable white leather sneakers or supportive walking sandals with grip
  • Sun hat

Avoid: flimsy sandals (flip-flops or slides), high heels, and smooth-soled shoes. The ancient marble is extremely slippery, like all the time. It's very dangerous, actually.

Day 1: Plaka, Ancient Agora & the Acropolis

7:30 AM Breakfast

You can start your day with Greek yogurt, honey, fruit, and coffee.

Some Suggestions:

  • Little Kook (arrive before crowds)
  • Yiasemi
  • 8:30 AM Wander Plaka & Anafiotika

    The Plaka Neighborhood

The morning is ideal for the quiet streets (at this time) in Athens' oldest neighborhood at the base of the Acropolis, photos without excessive crowds, and some window shopping or actual shopping before it gets too hot. And maybe another coffee. Or a couple of cat visits.

You can explore Anafiotika's whitewashed alleyways, local artisan shops, and hidden staircases and courtyards.

    11:00 AM Roman Agora

    The Roman Agora

You will spend about an hour or so.

    12:00 PM Ancient Agora

    The Ancient Agora of Athens

The highlight will include, the Temple of Hephaestus, Stoa of Attalos, and excellent Acropolis views.

    1:30 PM Lunch

Now, it's time for lunch back in Plaka.

    Some Suggestions:

3:00 PM The Acropolis Museum (and air conditioning break)

    The Acropolis Museum

This is the perfect time to be indoors during the hottest part of the day. You can stay until about 4:30 PM and enjoy the,

    • Museum exhibits
    • Café terrace
    • Restroom break
    • Cold drinks

4:45 PM Walk to Acropolis Entrance

Remember to grab water or top off your water bottle before entering.

    5:00 PM Acropolis Visit

    The Acropolis of Athens

The light is softer, the temperatures are lower, and the marble looks dreamy.

    Allow 2–2.5 hours for:

    • Parthenon
    • Erechtheion
    • Temple of Athena Nike
    • Panoramic city views

    7:15 PM Sunset View

The Acropolis closes at 8:00 PM, so if you visit during the summer, you won't catch the sunset from the Acropolis itself but you can immediately afterward nearby.

    7:45 PM Rooftop Dinner

A great Athens nighttime experience is seeing the illuminated Acropolis while dining.

    Some Suggestions:

    9:30 PM Volta (post-meal walk)

You can stroll around Monastiraki and Plaka neighborhoods. The Acropolis is beautifully lit after dark, and the atmosphere is incredible.

One advantage of this schedule is that you avoid climbing the Acropolis in the strongest sun, while still seeing the museum beforehand, so all the artifacts and history are fresh in your mind when you reach the site. Also, you might find that all the morning tickets are sold out since the morning at the Acropolis is so overly-hyped.

    Some final reminders

If you are still planning your trip, buy your Acropolis tickets ASAP. Don't be afraid to get lost, you will. Athens is not on a grid. And maps didn't work for me. Like don't follow street signs. This itinerary is general, so the suggested restaurants might not suit a more budget-minded traveler.

Day 2: Markets, Culture & Modern Athens

    8:00 AM Breakfast

Try spanakopita, Greek coffee, fresh orange juice, and a pastry.

    9:00 AM Monastiraki

    The Monastiraki Neighborhood

    Consider exploring:

    • Flea markets
    • Small boutiques
    • Local crafts

    10:30 AM National Garden

    The National Garden of Athens

You can have a peaceful break from the city, walk through shaded paths, and enjoy a slower pace.

    11:30 AM Syntagma Square

    Syntagma Square

You can watch the ceremonial guards at the Hellenic Parliament, perhaps see the changing of the guards.

    12:15 PM Lunch

You can have lunch near Kolonaki.

    Some Suggestions:

    1:45 PM Kolonaki Neighborhood

    The Kolonaki Neighborhood

This is Athens' trendy neighborhood where you can browse fashion boutiques, home décor shops, and local designers.

    3:00 PM Coffee & Rest

You can choose a terrace café and try a Freddo espresso and a Greek sweet treat. And just relax and take it in for about an hour.

    4:30 PM Lycabettus Hill

    Mount Lycabettus

Take the funicular or hike (takes about 15-30 minutes). This location offers a dramatic and rewarding panoramic view over Athens.

6:00 PM The Golden Hour & Photos

You can spend time enjoying the view and it's an excellent solo-travel photography location.

    7:30 PM Final Dinner

Treat yourself to a memorable last meal in Athens.

    Some Suggestions:

    9:30 PM Volta

You can walk through the illuminated streets around Plaka and Monastiraki. The Acropolis and surrounding neighborhood remain lively after dark.
